History of Pura Tirta Empul

     Long time ago, live a mighty and unbeatable king. His name is Mayadanawa, he was a king from Bali, son of Dewi Danu Batur and family of Daitya. Mayadanawa became popular because of his supranatural power. He can transform to something he want to, such a animal, plant and also inanimate objects. With his supranatural power, he can conquer alot of area, and also increase his base. Because of his great power, he became an arrogant king. He prohibit people of Bali to praise God, all his manifest, he also prohibit people of Bali to perform traditional ceremonies and he ddestroyed people of Bali place to praise, which is Pura. Because of that, people of Bali's plan became damage and epidemic of disease spread everywhere on Bali . The people of Bali became sad and miserable, but they can't do anything.

      Knowing this, all the Gods became furious. Then Bhatara Indra ordered his troops to attack Mayadanawa. In the attack against Mayadanawa, right-wing troops are led by Citrasena and Citrangada. Left-wing troops led by Sangjayantaka. While the main forces led by Bhatara Indra. Reserve troops led by Gandarwa for the Mayadanawa royal emergency, by sending Bhagawan Naradha to spy and enter the kingdom of Mayadanawa king.
As Indra's troops attacked, the Mayadanawa troops gave a great fight. But still Bhatara Indra's troops gave a superior forces and Mayadanawa forces panicked and comitted suicide along with patih that carries Kala Wong. Because the sun had set, the war was stopped.
Seeing his troops defeated, Mayadanawa also acted cunningly to defeat the forces of Bhatara Indra. At night, Mayadanawa creates a poisonous spring or so-called 'Cetik' near the tents of Bhatara Indra troops. In order not to hold the trail, he walked to settle by tilting the soles of the feet, so that the area was also known by the name Tampak Siring or in Indonesian Tampak Siring means tilted palms.
The next day many troops of Bhatara Indra fell ill from drinking the poisonous water. Seeing that, Bhatara Indra then plunged the tomb to the ground and came the holy spring that could offer the 'cetik' poison made in Mayadanawa. This holy spring, then called Tirta Empul.
Bhatara Indra and his troops then continue the pursuit of Mayadanawa. Knowing this, for his remarks, Mayadanawa

     Transformed himself into Manuk Raya (chicken), and the area where he was disguised was later called the Village of Manukaya. But unfortunately the thousand dear, Bhatara Indra could not be fooled and chase continues to be done. Mayadanawa went elsewhere and later transformed himself into a Timbul Fruit so that the area was called Timbul Village. Since the success failed again, Mayadanawa also committed suicide again and then disguised as Busung (janur) so that the area is now called Blusung Village. Failing again, Mayadenawa slipped back to another place and then turned into Susuh so that the area was named Panyusuhan Village. Unfortunately he came back again, then he came back again and disguised himself as an Angel so that the area was called Kadewatan Village.

     Because his disguise never paid off, Mayadanawa then transformed himself into Batu Paras (padas rock) with his patih Si Kala Wong. It is known by Bhatara Indra that the rock is grounded by Bhatara Indra so that Mayadanawa and the doom of his death. The blood continues to flow through a river called the Petanu River. The river was cursed by Indra Bhatara whose contents, "If the river water is used to irrigate the fields, the fields will become fertile, but when harvested will bleed and smell the carcass." The curse is 1000 years old. The death of Mayadanawa is then celebrated as Hari Raya Galungan by the Hindus in Bali, as a heaven pillar of Dharma (truth) victory against Adharma (evil).
